The Charity Shield is an invitation Competition only. The present format at the moment is The Charity Cup invites teams at Step 3 and Step 4 of The FA pyramid system were the Charity Shield invites team at Step 5 and Step 6.
The first match for each competing team is in July/August before the league programme starts. The Competition started back in 1919/1920 were Hertford Town were the winners.
