Double Up For Watford Ladies

Watford Ladies became the first team to clinch The FA UMBRO Fives Women’s title on two occasions when they battled to repeat their 2007 success at Wembley on Saturday (20th June).

After the setback of losing their opening fixture 1-0 to NE Danger WFC, Watford rallied to win their two remaining group games by an aggregate score of 7-0.

In the semi final, Watford came up against the side many people were tipping for honours in Curzon Ashton, who they beat 3-2 after extra time, going on to edge an equally tense final 2-1 against TNS Shrewsbury – again after extra time.

It emphasised Watford’s club ethic that playing the small sided game is crucial to the future development of their players as a whole.

Charlie Nicholson says that she was delighted to be singled out for her efforts. “It was an amazing experience. To play at Wembley is something we all dream about as kids, but you never think you’ll actually get the chance to do it.

“The fact that we won and that I was honoured with the Player of the Tournament title just made it an unforgettable day.”

Watford’s Manager, Sian Williams, feels that her players can only get better. “I was very proud of the girls when you consider that three of them are still teenagers. This wasn’t our most experienced team but they showed from the first round that they have the character, fight and energy needed for success.

“They fully deserved to make it to Wembley and winning the whole thing is a fantastic achievement.”

Leanne McGroarty, Watford’s captain, says that her family enjoyed the day as well. “It was a great tournament from start to finish. I was looking forward to the day at Wembley from the moment we qualified – and it proved to be an incredible experience.

“The changing rooms were huge, and walking up the steps in front of my two daughters to collect the trophy was an experience I will never forget.”
