The Hertfordshire Football Association is saddened by the news that Fred Reid passed away in Hospital on the 7th January 2010 after a fall at his home.
Fred’s service to football spanned many decades, first become a member of the Hertfordshire Football Association in 1966. Fred progressed from the position of North Division Secretary to become President of the Association in 1986 when he also took up the role of FA Representative.
After 10 years as President Fred stood down and became an Honorary Past President. He will be sorely missed by everyone at the Hertfordshire Football Association.
Away from the Hertfordshire Football Association, Fred was an excellent match official, progressing to Football League level. No doubt the highlight of his career came in 1960 when he was appointed to be a linesman in the FA Cup Final, where Wolverhampton Wanderers beat Blackburn Rovers 3-0. In the same year Fred also officiated in the inaugural Intercontinental Cup where Real Madrid defeated Peňarol of Uruguay.
Fred passed on the benefit of his experience by assessing referees, something that he thoroughly enjoyed doing, as well as being an active member of the North Herts Referees’ Society.
Our thoughts and sympathies are with Fred’s family to whom we send our sincere condolences.
