Match Report:

Dun Cow FC edge Hadley FC in a closely matched cup final to reclaim the Hertfordshire FA Veterans’ County Cup.

Goals from Leigh Sutton, Adam Paine and Mark Phillips see Stevenage’s Dun Cow FC beat Hadley FC to lift the Veteran’s Cup after missing out in last year’s final.

It was Hadley that had the better of the opening exchanges though, the dangerous Kieran Bowskill turning & shooting smartly for the bricks in the opening 10 minutes, only to see his shot saved brilliantly by Tony Harvey in the Dun Cow goal.

It didn’t take the Cow long to settle to the pace of the game however as James Dilnut directed a diving header narrowly over the bar for Dun Cow team-mate Coughlin’s cross.

The Hitchin Sunday League team then came close to breaking the deadlock again; Matt Phillips beat the offside trap for Dun Cow but couldn’t get past Hadley keeper, Barlow as he smartly saved from a narrow the angle.

Barlow could do nothing about the resulting corner though as Adam Paine’s inviting set piece was headed home from Dun Cow defender, Leigh Sutton to give his team a 1-0 lead in the 25 minute.

Less than 20 seconds later Hadley FC found themselves level! The Bricks replying almost immediately as Jamie Derby fired home an 8 yard rebound from strike partners Osobu's intial shot to level the scores at 1-1.

The goals didn’t stop there though, as only 5 minutes after equalising Hadley fell behind again. The Cow taking 2-1 lead into the interval through Adam Paine’s wind assisted cross-shot that found the back of the net after evading everyone, including Barlow in the Bricks goal.

Paine nearly turned provider again after the break for Dun Cow, as Mark Phillips came agonisingly close to connecting with the wingers cross to extend his team’s lead.

Phillips wasn’t to be denied in the 64th minute though as the impressive Dun Cow striker brought the ball out of the sky with one touch and deftly lobbed it over the onrushing keeper with the next to make it 3-1 to the Cow.

Hadley FC didn’t give up hope in an evenly matched contest however, and nearly drew a goal back in in the 71st minute as Bowskill arrowed a header just the wrong side of the post from Hamilton’s set piece.

The Bricks couldn’t find a way back into the tie though as Dun Cow held on to reclaim the Hertfordshire FA Veterans’ Challenge Cup following their last County Cup victory in 2014/15.
