The Protection of Freedoms Act 2012 requires that anyone who works with children in a supervisory role must have a Criminal Records Check. This now includes referees in youth football.
The County FA has always stated that best practice is to renew your check after three years, and going forward this will be a requirement if you wish to continue to referee in youth football.
Anyone who has a check that is older than 3 years, and referees in youth football, is required to complete a new check for 2015-16 season.
If you are not sure of the date of your check, you can find it on your profile on member services.
You are not required to do this if you ONLY referee in adult football.
In order to support referees and help comply with this process the County FA have asked the Youth Leagues to assist their referees and act as verifiers after the referee has completed the on-line process.
All the referee has to do is then contact the youth league they officiate on to arrange an appointment and take their documents with them to be verified Watford Friendly League, Royston Crow League, Mid Herts Rural Minors League and West Herts Youth League all currently have verifiers.
If you are not part of an affiliated youth league, or your league does not carry out the verification service, you will need to come to the County Ground to have your documents verified.
As 95% of all Criminal Records Checks are now carried out online, this is the way we are going to proceed going forward.
Please read the guidance notes carefully, as well as the required acceptable documents, as the verifier cannot be held responsible for a person turning up with incorrect documents.
In particular look at the requirements for a driving licence, both parts, and ensure that documents are in date and not printed from the internet. The verifier signs a legal declaration that he has seen all the original correct documents.
In order to get the process started the guidance notes for the online Criminal Records Check System can be found here.
