About FA Skills
FA Skills is a unique football coaching programme that gives 5-11s of all abilities the opportunity to get active, learn new football skills and enjoy the game. The FA Skills team have been providing high quality football coaching courses for children since 2007 and have to date provided over 8 million child places on the programme, aiming to provide 1.2 million coaching opportunities per year.
The Skills team provide after-school football coaching, holiday football coaching, support for charter standard football clubs and also work within primary schools providing specialist football coaching.
The aim is to develop better and more technically gifted football players but also to give every child the opportunity to be the best that they can be.
The FA Skills Coaches in Hertfordshire aim to develop children who:
- Are able to meet the demands of the situation across the Technical, Psychological, Social & Physical corners of development
- Can play at different tempos, with different ideas, through the thirds when defending and attacking
- Have a positive impact on the group and society
- Can make decisions that have a positive impact on the game and their lives
- Are prepared to develop a growth mind set
The FA Skills Coaches currently cover the Welwyn & Hatfield and Letchworth Garden City.
The FA Skills programme works in over 2500 primary schools each year, providing lessons for the children against the requirements of the PE National Curriculum and supports teachers’ professional learning.
Our coaches will typically work with a primary school one day a week for the duration of half a term (minimum 6 lessons, maximum of 12 lessons with the same class), providing specialist, age appropriate learning for all ages from Years 1 to 6.
As well as helping to develop the technique, ball skills and confidence of children in primary schools, The FA Skills coaches aim to pass on invaluable lesson ideas and guidance on the delivery of football to the pupils’ teachers.
If your school hasn't had a chance to work with The FA Skills programme yet, please send us an email at Kieran.Fox@TheFA.Com
After School Sessions
After school Skills Centres are weekly football courses for boys and girls who want to improve their football skills outside of school and have fun with their friends. The FA Skills coaches run after school football coaching courses on the same night each week at a local venue.
The after school Skills Centres cater for all abilities, from beginners to more experienced players and provide the opportunity for children to develop technically, psychologically, physically and socially, in line with our FA coaching model.
Our after school football coaching sessions last at least an hour and cost a maximum of £3 per coaching session (to cover the cost of the venue hire).
FA Skills Centres
Each FA Skills Centre is unique to the children taking part each week. These coaching sessions are aimed at meeting the needs of the children involved within the sessions, and can be mixed sessions or specific sessions for girls, players with identified potential or children with recognised disabilities.
Within these Centres we try develop a variety of different skills and techniques when attacking and defending to help children involved develop some key technical, physical, psychological and social skills.
Charter Standard Clubs
FA Skills Coaches work closely with Hertfordshire FA to help support local Charter Standard Clubs and coaches. The support available can be tailored to meet the needs of the clubs and coaches involved, providing support within your training sessions and/or at your club venue.

The FA Skills offers football coaching during the school holidays at Skills Centres throughout England. Our holiday football coaching sessions are a great way for children to try the programme for the first time, providing a great introduction to our weekly after school Skills Centres.
FA Skills holiday sessions typically last the duration of a morning or afternoon and can be accessed for a small fee. The FA in partnership with Sport England and lead partner Lidl, fund each of our holiday football coaching sessions as part of a combined investment into promoting healthy lifestyles and developing grassroots football in England.
Our holiday football coaching sessions take place during every school holiday, except for Christmas.
Love FA Skills? What Next?
One of the aims of The FA Skills Programme is to encourage children to get more enjoyment out of football, and playing for a well-organised club is a great way to continue to enjoy our national game.
If your child wants to start playing more football with others in their age group, Mini-Soccer is a great place to start. The pitches and goals are smaller, and there are fewer players so everyone gets more touches of the ball, increasing enjoyment and participation. Children play in their own age groups, which again builds confidence.
Clubs which run youth teams will play Mini-Soccer, so to find a club near you, visit the 'Find A Club' facility on our website.
In the long-term, The FA Skills Programme aims to build the future of football in England.
