Hertfordshire Men Shape Up

Watford FC CSE Trust have joined forces with the Premier League, PFA and Public Health, Hertfordshire County Council to extend the male-only adult...

Having already run for two years, the Shape Up programme has seen over 640 men engage in sessions across Hertfordshire with participants recording a staggering collective weight loss of over 3.1 tonnes with 23.6 million calories burned over that time. It wasn’t only physical fitness that saw an improvement as 93% of participants reported improved self-esteem.

Unlike fad diets though, this programme, backed by local GPs, didn’t just help men shed pounds it also helped them keep it off by ensuring a sustainable lifestyle change. A follow-up survey showed that after 12 months of engaging in the programme, 68% of participants had lost even more weight than when they had finished, and 91% still had improved exercise levels.

The premise was simple. A male-only twelve week programme, where participants meet up weekly for a ninety minute session comprising of a thirty minute nutritional education segment and a sixty minute physical activity session.

Now the Trust are proud to report that this successful programme will be continuing for a further three years thanks to a partnership with the Premier League Charitable Fund, PFA and Public Health, Hertfordshire County Council.

The funding delivered through the Premier League PFA Community Fund as well as Public Health, Hertfordshire County Council, will enable the Trust to continue reducing male obesity in Hertfordshire; making Shape Up one of the largest male-only weight management programmes run by a premier league club’s charity in the country.

Hertfordshire County Council’s director of Public Health, Jim McManus, said:

“The leadership and commitment shown by football clubs like Watford to run community health interventions is a really important part of our work.

“Shape Up is a fantastic initiative that has really changed lives; I know this funding will help the programme reach even more men and help them make positive changes to their life as a result.

“We are committed to helping everyone live a healthier, happier life and we know that men sometimes need a little extra encouragement.  This programme delivers that.”

Whilst Head of Community at the Premier League, Nick Perchard said of the PLPFA Community Fund’s support;

“I hope that the new investment from the PLPFA in the Shape Up scheme, delivered by Watford Community Sports and Education Trust, helps to enhance the great work already being delivered. The funding will enable many more Watford fans to learn more about health and well-being, using the inspiration and support of the club to help them on their weight-management journey.”
