The late Theo Peters with a group of trainee referees in 2009

In Memory of Theo Peters

We are saddened to hear of the passing of a well-known and popular figure in the Hertfordshire football community

We are saddened to hear of the passing recently of Theophilus Raphael Anthony Peters

Theo was a well-known and popular figure in the Hertfordshire football community and will be sadly missed by a great many throughout the game in the county and beyond

He was a referee, a referee instructor, assessor and Hitchin Sunday League referee secretary amongst other things. He embraced refereeing but not necessarily by the book, often getting his message across with the benefit of his experiences in over twenty five years refereeing in local football.

For a number of years he assisted the County FA with referee courses in Hertfordshire. It was always enjoyable to work with him even if some of his advice to candidates was at times a little 'unorthodox'.

It was clear that Theo greatly enjoyed being part of the training team helping people to get into refereeing. Theo brought three things to a referee class: wide experience in grassroots football, practical ideas and advice and, above all else, enthusiasm for refereeing.

He was a willing helper on courses and during breaks would often be seen giving small group help where he felt that trainees might benefit. At the end of courses he wasn't shy about signing up suitable candidates for the Hitchin Sunday League and mentoring them through their early games.

Theo was not just a local referee, he was a genuine local character, a man that always had a smile on his face. He was a joker, a lover of life and all those that met him were better for doing so. He had an infectious enthusiasm and was supportive of everyone he met, not just referees.

For those that would like to pay their respects, his funeral will take place on Monday 18th June at 1.15pm at Harwood Park Crematorium, Watton Road, Stevenage, SG2 8XT. Everyone that knew him is welcome to attend and recall memories about the man. Afterwards there will be a private family gathering.

Family flowers only. If you would like to donate to Theo’s chosen charity in his honour please visit the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance website (marked in memory of Theo Peters - ID 0956292) or put a donation by cash or cheque in the collection plate at the funeral service.

Our thoughts are with his wife Barbara and the family at this very sad time.

Theo's widow Barbara would very much like to thank everyone who attended Theo's service on Monday 18th June and to everyone who donated to Theo's chosen charity. It was lovely to see his good friends from the sports world he loved so much.
