Spotlight: Hitchin Sunday League
We take a closer look at one of the established adult male leagues in our area, as they look to kickstart a new phase of growth after nearly 50 years of Sunday football
The Hitchin Sunday Football League is an adult male 11v11 league that has been in operation since 1977 and primarily serves the local towns of Hitchin, Letchworth, Stevenage and Baldock, whilst also covering surrounding areas within a 15-mile radius of Hitchin.
Currently comprised of 27 teams across three divisions, the league caters to a range of abilities. Having weathered the challenges of the pandemic, it now is looking to strengthen its offering and re-establish a fourth division with the addition of more teams.
To help achieve this growth the league are working towards becoming England Football Accredited, which is recognised by UEFA as a leading scheme of its kind and is shared throughout Europe as an example of best practice.
England Football Accreditation is for leagues and clubs who are committed to raising standards in grassroots football, creating a positive environment and experience for players, while ensuring all feel included by flying the flag for Respect and diversity.
Achieving England Football Accreditation helps clubs and leagues become more sustainable, with a greater capacity to grow. With strong standards of governance in place it creates a solid foundation for competitive club structures for many years to come.
